Pets
Sadly, rabbits are still sold cheaply in pet stores or given away as gifts. Rabbits are also still ignorantly considerd children's pets. Rabbits are very misunderstood animals and unfortunately the information available from pet stores and backyard breeders is out of date and incorrect. Because of the incorrect and outdated information given out about rabbits, most people think that rabbits only live 2-3 years! This is so wrong. Rabbits should live long, healthy lives but because diet information is so incorrect, most bunnies will die from diet related illnesses. Rabbits need fresh hay, fresh greens & water every day. Rabbits are the third most surrendered animal to shelters. Most are surrendered because the children have lost interest. Many surrenders are unwanted litters from rabbits that were sexed incorrectly at a pet shop or the rabbit is sick and the owners don't want to spend the money going to a vet. Just because a rabbit is cheap to buy (or sometimes free), doesn't mean they will be cheap to look after. Worse still are the bunnies who are purchased and left to live their lives forgotten in a tiny hutch in the backyard. These bunnies live their lives in a prison cell. Surrounded by four walls and waiting for someone to notice them and give them some food, water or attention.
"Hutches" that are available for purchase from stores are often so small that an adult rabbit can only barely turn around. Rabbits can grow to the size of a small dog. They need room to stand up on their hind legs, lie down with all four legs stretched out and room to play and jump like bunnies like to do.
